Succession planning is multi-layered and there’s a lot to learn!

Once the successor has been chosen and the implementation plan created, it’s then time to make it all happen.

From the owner’s perspective, they must accept that there will be major changes as the implementation of the plan proceeds. Over time, their contribution to the business will diminish as the successor assumes more of their responsibilities. From the successor’s point of view, there is a shift in perspective, attitude and skills.

In managing this process, owners must adopt a mentoring and supporting role, allowing their own experience to filter through, whilst providing enough free rein for the successor to develop. This is often when tensions run high and frustrations begin to appear.

At WBL we have found this transition from owner to successor to be successful through a shared learning programme.
